Development of railway museum – physical and digital

Development of railway museum – physical and digital. An implementation project in the intervention area ’Destination 7-sam Värmland’ that will be carried out from spring ’24 – summer ’26.

About the project

Hagfors municipality wants to develop Hagfors Railway Museum into a more interactive and family-friendly destination through this project. The goal is to attract more families with children, young people, and railway enthusiasts by combining physical and digital experiences, including integration with the Roblox game Railblox.

The project is supported by a tripartite collaboration between Hagfors municipality, Hagfors Memorial Museum, and Hagfors Railway Museum's Friends Association. The collaboration has strong local anchoring with support from, among others, the Monica Zetterlund Foundation and regional actors such as Visit Värmland.

Activities and goals that will be implemented during the project period include:.

Restoration of cold storage:

Transform a cold storage (172 m²) into a heated exhibition space.

Enable exhibitions year-round and create new spaces for families with children and enthusiasts.

Integration of Railblox:

Create a connection between the museum and the game, where visitors can play together and solve tasks on-site.

Railblox Day will be introduced as a recurring event to engage and attract more visitors.

Restoration of railway tracks:

Restore 1 km of the narrow-gauge railway for museum traffic.

Opportunity to run themed trains (e.g., Santa trains), creating a unique and long-term attraction for visitors.

Expected outcomes within the project are to:

  • Increase the attractiveness as a destination for families with children and train enthusiasts.
  • Re-establish railway traffic on part of the closed line, strengthening the area's historical identity.
  • Through a unique combination of digital and physical content, engage new generations and make the museum more accessible and interactive.

The project aims to unite traditional museum activities with innovative experiences and strengthen Värmland as a tourist destination.
